Eating Together Week Launch

February 24th, 2011 by admin No comments »

When we think back at some of our fondest memories, many of them are surrounded by eating.  It’s a pretty simple concept – families that eat together – stay together.

We all have memories that we can recall about times spent laughing and arguing over a meal.  I remember telling my grandma how much I loved a particular dish, and she would make the same thing for days…

Last Sunday, I was able to be a part of the launch event for Touchstone’s Eating Together Campaign.  With a weeklong schedule of events encouraging friends and family to share a meal with those they love – it all kicked off with Richmond Fire & Rescue serving pancakes at Thompson Community Centre along with the BC Lions’ Angus Reid sharing some stories.

Did you know its Eating Together week?  Yep! Mayor Brodie proclaimed it!

Angus promises that we’ll serve syrup our of the grey cup if the Lions take it this year…

Leave it to the firefighters to make a giant pancake for a giant football player!

Me in Four.

I’ve been meaning to get more of myself out on the blog and it’s been one of those things that have lingered for the last month or so.  So I figured a good start would be to re-write this “bio” thing so hopefully it stands out a bit more.  So here’s me in four headings.

I love home.

Recently, a filled out an ice breaker trivia thing for a retreat and one of the questions on the email was: “If you could go anywhere and money were not an issue, where in the world would you want to visit?”.  I struggled with this question for the longest time.  Usually my typical go to answer is, New York – just because it has this aura and busyness about it.  But recently, I think my introverted side comes out and if given the choice – I’m happiest at home with my TV.  It’s just comfortable.

Where in the world would you go?

I worry about my wife.

I don’t spend a lot of time worrying about things.  Something clicked between the end of high school and mid-way through university and all the things that I stressed about suddenly didn’t seem to matter as much.  It always worked out. and that taught me to I have faith that everything will turn out alright.  I’m a realistic, optimist and things usually are never THAT bad.

On the flipside, my wife worries – A LOT.  So if I can put ease to things, that’s what I try to do… and think about.

What do you worry about?

I can solve the world’s problems.

I love one on ones where I can spend time with people in a smaller setting.  I believe it allows people to open up and talk about things that really matter.  The downside is, when people pour out what’s on their mind – I usually have thoughts to contribute as well.  Sometimes it’s not the most appropriate at the time. I’m not the best at just listening to someone vent.  But I mean well.

I believe zombies bring friends closer together.

There’s nothing like surviving a zombie apocalypse that brings friends closer together.  Those that have gone through it will attest to this.  If you’re confused – find me on Xbox Live (bkmanhole) and I’d love to kill some things with you.

If you like these kind of posts, please let me know.  I am shamefully motivated by comments.

Eating Together – Youth in Rainbow Smocks!!

Families that eat together, stay together… it’s a simple premise.  As part of Touchstone Family Association’s “Eating Together” campaign, I was out at the Minoru Senior’s Centre doing some coverage of a group of volunteer youth serving dinner.  For more about the campaign – visit: www.eatingtogether.ca. (I’ll have more when I post some photos from their kickoff event this Sunday)

These youth are a well oiled machine, providing dinner service for over 100 seniors for their monthly dinner.  Speaking with one of the coordinators before the event, these youth come out every month to help serve.  Being more and more involved with the not-for profit since finishing school, meeting volunteers has truly changed the way I view service.

It never ceases to amaze me how much people give. They are give to give. It’s not about volunteer hours, church service but there’s a genuine sense of giving back.  I definitely wasn’t this way when I was their age…

Being a volunteer manager, and a photographer.  You get to meet and observe people and talk about their motivations for volunteering… and there’s something amazing that radiates from a volunteer who’s found their niche.  I love it!

and… btw. If you’re wondering if this is a single gender volunteer team.  Think again!
